Curtains are ideal window decorations that not only spice up a room and embellish plain windows, but also provide protection from the light outside. Curtains also provide much needed privacy for a room or building’s occupants.

Types of curtains

There are different types of curtains that are classified according to their usage and their styles.

Types of curtains by placement

Bedroom curtains

When choosing curtains for bedroom windows, always consider two important factors – privacy and ventilation. Typically, bedroom curtains should be thick enough to allow the dwellers some privacy especially at night when it is dark outside and the interiors are lighted. However, bedroom curtains should also have the adequate thickness to allow proper ventilation. If it’s cold outside, choose bedroom curtains that keep the heat in. For hot and humid months, change to bedroom curtains that allow air to come into the room while still providing adequate privacy.

Stage curtains

Curtains are also seen in theaters and stages where performances are held. While setting up props for a stage play or just to keep things under wrap for the time being, stage curtains are closed. The closing and opening of stage curtains are symbolic for the start and end of stage performances. Often, curtains used to conceal items on stage are made of heavy and dark fabric. Curtains can also be used during performances, if the production calls for the use of such cuts of fabric.

Bathroom curtains

Curtains are also used in bathrooms. However, instead of a typical cloth or fabric, bathroom and shower curtains are made of water-resistant materials. The use of a shower curtain helps shroud the bather and helps contain the water spatter within the stall or in the bathtub for easier clean-up. Bathroom curtains come in many whimsical designs and styles.

By style

Curtains are also classified by the way they are cut and designed.

Pleated curtains

One style used in curtains are pleats or folds in the fabric. Pleats are the folds made by the fabric based on the way the curtains are hung on the rod. Box pleats on curtains are often used in formal events and gatherings, with folds that are precise and even. For heavier kinds of fabric, goblet pleats are used.

Lace curtains

Curtains made out of sheer material such as lace, tulle, or any other translucent fabric allow for minimal light control. However, these types of curtains are better suited for rooms that need a lot of ventilation as sheer or lace curtains are light and airy. A scarf or a valance or another curtain made of a more opaque fabric can be used with it in order to still allow some privacy or block out the light from the window as well.

Lined curtains

Homeowners living in cold areas can fare well with lined curtains. Not only do these curtains ward off the cold from coming into the room, but these curtains also prevent heat from escaping out. Lined curtains also give maximum privacy for a room’s occupants.
