A home office refers to an office that is setup at home. This sort of office is a common option for those with their own small business, or those who telecommute. A typical home office will contain a desk, an office chair, and a computer or laptop. Some home offices may also have a filing cabinet and bookshelves.

All about the home office

Home offices grew in popularity in the 1990s with the Internet boom. Home offices have allowed people to work from home. Regardless if these people are telecommuting while working for an employer or have businesses of their own, Internet connection has paved the way for people to work remotely, in surroundings where they may be more comfortable.

A basic home office will have a desk, an office chair, a telephone and fax system, and a computer. Since people are encouraged to be “paperless,” communication is kept within emails and phones. There has been less need for printed memos and the like.

However, there are certain industries that require a paper trail. For people in these industries, home offices will necessarily include a filing cabinet. These filing cabinets are often made of metal alloy.

Bookshelves are also optional additions to home offices. With bookshelves, you can keep necessary reference materials close by. This may include law and medical reference books, as well as the good old dictionary.

How to set up a home office

Your home office needs to work well for you. This means that this should be able to facilitate your efficiency as a worker. Here are some tips:
1. Allot a space for your home office. This may be a small section in your living area or a separate room. Having a home office in a separate room is best.

2. Select the office setup that works best for you. There is the U-shaped arrangement, which keeps everything within reach. The L-shaped arrangement, on the other hand, allows a secondary workspace. This may make it seem like you have two comfortable workspaces. The V-shaped arrangement is like the U-shape arrangement, but with a smaller work area for your computer. The “wings” are surfaces you can use to stack notes and other gadgets, such as the phone and fax machines.

3. Ideally, you should have two business lines, one for telephone and one for fax. If this is not possible, get a telefax machine so you can use one line for both.

4. The office furniture that you will buy needs to fit the office arrangement that you chose, as well as the space that you have.
