Friend of the golden couple of American modern design, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen was also a luminary on his own right. Though many have accused him of having no style of his own, it was his ability to give what his clients really want and meld it with the necessary degrees of modernism that finally got him recognized as one of the most prolific American designers of all time.

The personal life of Eero Saarinen

Eero Saarinen is the son of Eliel Saarinen, a famous and talented architect who later became the first president of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. The Saarinen family migrated to the United States from Finland in 1923. Eero studied under his father in Cranbrook where he also met the Eames couple. By 1929, Eero went off to Paris to study sculpture and furniture design. A scholarship kept him in Europe, where he studied and improved his knowledge and skills from 1934 to 1935. He went back to Cranbrook to teach. In 1937, he teamed up with Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser (Eames) for the win in the New York’s Museum of Modern Art contest. This win propelled him and the Eames couple to great heights and had them recognized throughout the designing world.

The design ethics of Eero Saarinen

In most of Saarinen’s work, both in architecture and furniture design, his strong fascination and belief in the strength and appeal of concrete shells and of expressionism were evident. However, critics during Saarinen’s time were quick to judge him about not having a style of his own. Saarinen still received a lot of accolades for his architectural and designing prowess as he was able to give clients just what they want or need. This ability to give what is asked for was Saarinen’s own kind of style.

Popular works of Eero Saarinen

-in furniture

Saarinen first gained prominence when he and the Eames won accolades for the molded plywood chair project that they did in 1940. Following that success, Saarinen went on to craft notable pieces of furniture such as the Womb chair, ottoman and settee, the Grasshopper lounge chair and ottoman, and the Tulip or pedestal series. His chairs, as well as the first one he designed with the Eames, were produced by the Knoll Furniture Company for commercial release.

-in architecture

Just like his father, Saarinen was also a very skilled architect. After the death of his father, he took over the architectural firm and was commissioned to design and build many projects that are now gleaming examples of his creativity and hard work. Saarinen was the one responsible for the Gateway Arch behind the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, the Washington Dulles International Airport, and the TWA Flight Center at Kennedy International.
