Lighting in these modern times is more than just about illuminating an area. Lighting is now a tool to stylize a home and create ambience. Lighting can make a home feel comfortable, romantic or inviting. In the case of an all-white light room or home, bad lighting can make everything seem washed out and glaring. Hence, lighting should be thought of and planned before being installed. Your lighting should suit what you want to achieve in your room or home.
All about lighting
When planning on your home’s indoor lighting, there are several types to consider. The primary type of lighting is task lighting. With task lighting you get to do what you need to do. The focus of task lighting is function. These types of lighting are used to enable tasks, such as reading and writing. Work lamps are examples of task lighting.
Another type of lighting is accent lighting. This type establishes the mood of the room. Likewise, it can be used to draw attention to the room’s focal points. Decorative lighting is similar, and brings light to areas that are supposed to add to the décor of the room. Ambient lighting is lighting that bathes the room in comfortable, yet not glaring, light.
Lighting can be fluorescent or incandescent. Incandescent lighting can add to the mood, yet this eats up a lot of energy and should be avoided. Likewise, the trend these days is toward energy efficient lighting.
How to design your indoor lighting
1. Lighting is not something you decide on during the last minute. Plan ahead, and design lighting along with your home’s layout. Try to infuse as many energy efficient practices in your lighting and interior design. You can be energy efficient and stylish at the same time.
2. Modern lighting fixtures can enhance your home while downplaying imperfections. These days, dimmers are necessities. Likewise, layer lighting is a modern way of illuminating rooms at home.
3. Consider using recessed or track light for dens, living rooms, or other places where art is displayed.
4. Different heights in your lighting fixtures can create depth within the room. An example of this is combining ceiling light with floor lighting and table lamps.
5. Bathroom should be well lit. Safety is a major concern; style only comes second. Make sure to provide enough light in these rooms.
