Sofas are pieces of furniture often found in the living room. Prior to modern times, they were only found in the homes of the elite. As common seating implements, they are now commonly found in the homes of lower class to upper class people.
All about sofas
Sofas have become indispensable pieces of furniture. They are used mostly for receiving guests, relaxing with the family, or sharing tea or coffee. Before the advent of entertainment centers (rooms solely dedicated to audio and video entertainment), sofas were also closely associated with television watching. This is slowly being replaced by lounge chairs and movie house chairs, in rooms especially set up for watching television and home movies. Today, most sofas can be found in living rooms, dens, or waiting rooms.
The term for sofas actually came from “sofa,” an Arabic word that referred to an elevated area in receiving rooms for special guests. This area was decorated with cushions and rugs.
The first sofas came out towards the end of the 16th century. These furniture where completely stuff with straws, feathers, or horsehairs. Springs began to be incorporated by the early 1800s. The now-familiar sofas, made of wooden frames and springs came out in the early 1900s. Rubber foams, used for filling, were developed in the 1920s.
Types of sofas
Typical sofas can seat at least two people. They are made with armrests and cushioned seats and also come in different colors and designs. Sofas can be custom-made, according to the design and style that you prefer. For these cases, mostly it’s a matter of having the preferred fabric for the upholstery. This may be a little more costly than buying ready-made sofas.
Sofas come in different types. Some are sectional sofas, sofa beds, or loveseats. Loveseats, as the name implies, are sofas made for two. Sofa beds are sofas that have hidden sections that can be pulled out and turn the sofas into beds. Sectional sofas, on the other hand, are pieces of sofa sets that are put together, usually creating a ninety degree angle.
How to buy sofas
Before heading to the furniture shop, it is best to know what type of sofas you need. Measure the room first and the section allotted for the sofas. Figure out the color of sofas that you want, including the size and color of throw pillows. As for sofa designs, you can always opt to go online to view online catalogs. This saves you time and allows you to budget before even stepping into a store. You can even order online if yo don’t mind the delivery costs.
